ROCHEM BIO-FILT®  PROCESS & FUNCTION
Concept, design and operating procedure of the BIO-FILT® membrane bioreactor have been developed by ROCHEM UF Systeme GmbH, Hamburg,  together with renowned institutions.

The reliable function of this process and the operating safety of the membrane filtration and bioreactor technology have been proved by extensive studies and tests with pilot plants.

• .The bioreactor is manufactured as modular multi-tank construction from stainless steel. The adaptation to the purification demand is achieved by the respective design of the compact operating units.

• The Ultrafiltration unit consists of ROCHEM FM modules, where the combination of open channel construction and narrow gap technology allows for a highly efficient cleanability and high availability - and thus for a safe and economic operation. The ROCHEM FM module technology has been proven over several years in many different areas of waste water purification.

• The purification plant itself ensures an automatic, reliable and fail-safe operation with a minimum of maintenance and high availability. This is due to a construction that is adapted to the client's needs by a well .established manufacturing quality assurance system and a PLC based process control.

OPERATION
The waste water is fed into the reactor chamber, designed as a modular system, together with the process air.

The oxygen demand that is necessary for the biological degradation of contaminants is controlled by an oxygen meter.

According to the needs (mobil plants or plants for ships, industry or communities) and the degree of contamination, the pretreated waste water is transported through the modules in cross-flow, semi-cross-flow or dead-end operation modes.

The biomass retained by the membranes is fed back to the reactor together
with the partial stream circulating on the feed water side of the membranes. The filtrate flowing through the membranes
is pure and can be discharged.

Control variables for the concentration of the biomass in the reactor are the filtrate flux of the Ultrafiltration membranes and the amount of concentrated sludge discharged from the reactor.

The operating parameters - like hydraulic retention time, oxygen demand, recirculation volume, operating pres- sure, sludge discharge and energy demand - depend on the application of the Bio-Filt® plant.

Suspended solids and germs do not pass to the filtrate because of the small core size of the Ultrafiltration membranes. The values for BOD and COD in the filtrate depend on their concentration in the raw water and on the operation of the bioreactor.
However in all applications investigated up to now these concentrations have been below the specific limit values.
IMPROVED TECHNOLOGY FOR WATER PURIFICATION with
ROCHEM BIO-FELT®

The combination of a high density biomass reactor with the FM module system for Ultrafiltration forms the operating unit of the membrane bioreactor ROCHEM BIO-FELT®  which gives several advantages for waste water treatment.

SEWAGE INDUSTRIAL WASTE WATER BLACK WATER ON SHIPS
In combination with the separation of solid material the membrane bioreactor allows for
• increase of the concentration of the biomass up to 20 g/l
• greatly reduced process time
• controlled safe separation of bacteria,

viruses and parasites due to the ultrafiltration membrane that operates as a barrier

• compact construction with low space demand
• low cost operation even for small, decentralized plants
The complete retention of the biomass with membrane filtration leads to a high biomass  concentration in the reactor and to a highly efficient biological reaction process with:
• insensitivity to high loads of contaminants and changing peak loads
• low space demand
• economic operation even for small 'decentralized plants

The efficiency of the ROCHEM BIO-FELT® plants allows for the purification of black water on ships to achieve a quality far below the international limit values for contaminants imposed by MARPOL/IMO.
Therefore the environmentally sound purified waste water can be
discharged overboard in any harbour or coastal area.
The BIO-FELT® system:
• is insensitive to changing peak loads
• achieves a safe disinfection of the purified waste water; additional chlorination for disinfection l'not necessary
• requires only small installation space because of the sectional design
